APHORISM 9
"In the state of health the spirit-like vital force (dynamis ) animating the material human organism reins in supreme sovereignty.

It maintains the sensations and activities of the all the parts of the living organism in a harmony that obliges wonderment. the reasoning spirit who inhabits the organism can thus freely use this healthy living instrument to reach the lofty goal of human existence."

COMMENT BY EILEEN
My "take" on this aphorism is going to be from the metaphysical end of the yardstick; NOT the cold logic of Desecrate and left-brainism. Just the opposite. Being a metaphysician, Samuel Hahnemann's statement is a mind blower, literally and figuratively speaking. This is no 18th Century doctor talking. I'm sure what I'm going to say will disturb the Purists who already think I'm a heretic to the "cause"; but that is to be what it is. Hahnemann, at least, INCLUDED the spirit as part and parcel of our existence and an integral part of our Vital Force. Homeopaths today pooh-pooh it and avoid it like the Plague because to speak of metaphysical 'things' in connection with homeopathy (they feel) hurts its chances to be embraced by medical science.

DEFINING DELUSION and CLAIRVOYANCE--OUR ACHILLES HEEL IN HOMEOPATHY.....

Worse, and this falls onto the patient who is trusting that our knowledge is solid: very few homeopaths today (except for metaphysical ones or those who understand the energy system around and through us) can tell the difference between DELUSION and CLAIRVOYANCE. Unfortunately, this is the sticking point that shows homeopathy's weakness in the 20th and 21st century--because they confuse delusion and clairvoyance, and do not know the difference or how to tell the difference--they automatically, in most cases, put the patient under "delusional"--and the WRONG remedy is chosen for them because of the homeopath's closed-mindedness toward metaphysics or their ignorance. Either way, it harms the patient and does not create cure. At least Hahnemann was on top of this and could and did make the difference known. He saw spirit as an integral part of the mind/body and emotions; unlike our present-day homeopaths who try to avoid it, duck and run, or become arrogant that one does not need spirit as part of the wholism of the patient.

Indeed, it is because of sickness of spirit, where much of our disease may come out of--that or a trauma experienced in the physical body and then it reverberates outward to eventually, in serious cases, to also injure the spirit of the person as well (when this happens, you see such diagnosis as psychotic break, schizophrenia and multiple personality dysfunction, as examples). If the homeopath does not grasp that injury can occur at either end of this spectrum, then s/he will not know how to view the case, and especially will not know how to move the case from a long-term management standpoint.

I say this because in my 28 years of practice, I have handled too many "broken" cases where the patient was not seen as a whole; where spirit was not taken into consideration; where it was absolutely and essentially ignored and the person was placed under the "delusional" tag, instead. And of course, the correct remedies were never found. If homeopaths truly care about their patient and their outcome (and I know they do) they must take off their blinders of ignorance, arrogance and look at metaphysics and the energy system. Without this piece of the puzzle in tact, they are not going to be as good as they could be (that means getting the correct remedy more often, rather than less often) and more important: the patient is moved toward cure.

HAHNEMANN, MYSTIC and METAPHYSICIAN

In my opinion, Hahnemann is an enlightened soul shining through and speaking to all of us from a much more meta (unseen) physical (body) archives of knowledge. In my world, we would refer to him as a "mystic"--someone who was able to connect with "God/Goddess", in a clear, clean way to receive knowledge, like prismatic light refracting through him and then, to all of us. A mystic is a person of not only earth knowledge; but knowledge of the spirit, as well and they understand the integration of the two. This is alchemy at its best.

THE HALLS OF THE AKASHIC RECORDS

The archives of all our knowledge for all, is called the Hall of the Akashic Records is stored--sort of like a giant computer holographic archetype out there inter-dimensionally speaking. Souls who have earned the right to access this information, and indeed, channel it back to the rest of us, are integral to our continual evolvement. Hahnemann gave us an incredibly useful and miraculous tool to work with. These people are "enlightened." Different religions and philosophies have different labels for these people but in my world, they are all the same thing, regardless of labels. They connect, bring back and give forth to all of us from this large, vast archetype of knowledge. Hahnemann was such a vehicle.

THE MYSTERY SCHOOLS OF OLD

I have always contended that Hahnemann was a very old soul, who was the conduit through which the knowledge known as Homeopathy, came through him. It couldn't come through just any 'vehicle', either. In metaphysical language, he is using many of the "mystery school" language such as "spirit-like" and "organism" and "dynamis" for starters. From the old mystery schools; of which all of them have been physically destroyed (but as we all know, knowledge is energy and energy cannot be destroyed; only changed. The holographic knowledge 'out there' has kept all the mystery school information and Hahnemann certainly was a lightning rod for old knowledge coming back to us once again to be voiced, and therefore, grounded back into physical reality once more.

I'm sure homeopathy existed in the mystery schools and was taught there. I'm sure that other Ages, such as during Atlantis, Mu and Lemuria, it was well known, as well. Now, in the fourth evolution of our planet, the present day world we know, Hahnemann was the conduit for homeopathy returning to us once more. The change, this time, is that the common, ordinary citizen who is interested in homeopathy has it available to her or him and can be taught from beginning into deep, professional levels. The power of this incredible healing tool is finally free to be accessed by many more than it ever was before.

DEFINING DYNAMIS and VITAL FORCE

Returning to a more mundane look at this aphorism, Hahnemann is giving us the teaching that we are more than just a physical body. We are more than organs and systems. Indeed, we have a spirit which shines through each and every one of us. Our body, our heart (emotions), our mind and our spirit are all ONE. He has collectively named us holistically, a vital force or dynamis. The word, "dynamis" is a Greek word and means POWER.

I searched three dictionaries to see if the word 'dynamis' was there. It was not. Instead, the closest word to it is "dynamism" and I'd like to share some concepts with you--understanding, it is not the exact word we're looking for--but it does set us to thinking about the dynamis or vital force:

WEBSTER'S NEW WORLD DICTIONARY: 3rd college edition, 1984:

DYNAMIC:
" (Greek dynamikos < dynamis, power, strength <dynasthai, to be able to)"
Translation: OR to be able to utilize power and strength OR having the power and strength to be able to utilize.......(you fill in the blank on this one. I would say: what ever you focus your intent/will/desire upon, you are setting ENERGY (power) in motion from a sub-molecular, as well as molecular world, into "action" or dynamis/dynamics--EN)

Dynamic defined:
"1. An instrument for finding the magnifying power of a telescope 2. relating to an object, or objects, in motion: opposed to STATIC 3. energetic; vigorous; forceful 4. relating to or tending toward change or productive activity 5. Comput. a) designating or of an event that occurs during the execution of a program (dynamic dump] b) designating or of memory that requires periodic renewal of its stored data 6. Electronics designating or of a speaker, microphone, etc., in which a diaphragm or cone is attached to a coil that vibrates within a fixed magnetic field. "

2. THE NEW LEXICON WEBSTER'S ENCYCLOPEDIC DICTIONARY of the English Language, 1989.

DYNAMIC:
"1. adj. (Phys.) pertaining to dynamics -- active, forceful, energetic, capable of giving a sense of power and transmitting energy, a "dynamic personality" ;(med.) to do with the function of an organ rather than its structure. 2. n. a moving or driving force dynamical adj. dynamic (Theol.) endowing with divine power, dynamical inspiration."
3. FUNK & WAGNALLS COLLEGE STANDARD DICTIONARY, 1923. I like old dictionaries because they don't have a "sanitized" or "politically correct" take on many words--and they calls them as they sees them....and in this dictionary, my dear old friend that I've used for years, it did not let me down! It has the word, "DYNAMISM" and the newer dictionaries did not. Let's look at it:

DYNAMISM:
n. Philos. "One of the various doctrines that endeavor to explain the phenomena of the universe, chiefly or wholly, in terms of force of energy."

and let's look at:

DYANMICAL (same as Dynamic):
"a. 1. Phys. Sci. Of or pertaining to forces not in equilibrium; pertaining to motion as ther result of force: opposed to STATIC. 2. Pertaining to or characterized by mechanical force. 3. Producing or involving activity or action of any kind; motive; efficient; causal; applied sometimes to mental, moral and spiritual conditions."

You can see why I like my 1923 dictionary! Their take on these words is closer to metaphysics that I know and was taught and have lived in all my life. Let's noodle around in this dictionary for the other words used by Old Sam: vital force.

VITAL:
"n. 1. Pertaining to organic life 2. essential to or supporting life. 3. Affecting life; fatal to life; as in vital error. 4. Necessary to existence or continuance; necessary; essential. (F., <Latin vitalis, < vita, LIFE)."
FORCE:
"1. T. 1. To drive; compel; constrain; as to force a lock or a bolt. 2. To drive or impress forcibly upon some object or into some position; especially, to impose upon one without consent; as to force one's opinions on another. 3. To accomplish by force, main strength, or violence; produce (an effect) or bring to pass (a result) by or as by force, effort, or exertion: with a following adverb, as away, along, into, out, through, before the secondary object; as to force a smile; to force a bolt. 4. To compel by mental or moral force as by strength of evidence. 5. To overcome or conquer forcibly; compel to yield by force; hence, to commit a rape upon. 6. To stimulate artificially; as to force plants in a hothouse." (there is more but it does not apply to this discussion presently).

There is a second definition in this dictionary so let's take a look at it, also:

FORCE (2)
" 1. Any cause that produces, stops, changes or tends to produce, stop or change, the motion of a body. 2. Loosely, any operating energy. 3. Any moral, social, or political cause, or aggregate of causes. 4. Power or energy, as lodged in an individual agent. 5. Power or energy considered as exerting constraint or compulsion; coercion. 6. The capacity to convince or move; weight; import. 7. Binding effect; efficacy. 8. An organized or aggregated body of individuals; a police force; especially, a military aggregate; an army; troop. 9. Rhet. Vigor; energy; animation, strength."

"VITAL FORCE, the specific force assumed to account for organize life and its phenomena; vital principle. V. principle (Biol.), in the evolutionary view, a form of energy conjectured to give rise to and control the phenomena of organic life."

When you look at all these shades of definitions, you can see the decades showing. Since Hahnemann used the word "dynamis" let's look at it a little closer in the above definition to try and get a handle on what he's talking about and how it affects us on a daily basis:

DYNAMISM:
n. Philos. "One of the various doctrines that endeavor to explain the phenomena of the universe, chiefly or wholly, in terms of force of energy."

Comment:
There is no doubt that Hahnemann was very much in touch with metaphysics. He knew his words; he grew up on Latin and he understood the root meaning of them. He didn't just choose "dynamis" out of thin air and airy fairy, plunk it in the Organon.

No. He chose the EXACT word that would define what he wanted us to see and know and understand. He saw homeopathy as a force. An energy. A dynamic. As vital to life. He understood the underpinnings of homeopathy. You might look at it like this if we were looking at it two-dimensionally:

Dynamis

Vital Force

Universal

I'm going to touch upon a very deep metaphysical concept here. Quantum Physics is just beginning to breach into this area; but mystics have known about it for eons. I am going to add words to enlarge in a mundane way on these words. Let's look at the above with a few mystic traditions being added to this "formula" of Hahnemann's:

Dynamis--desire

Vital--self Force--will

Universal--your belief system/spirit

To make a sentence out of Hahnemann's version: It takes a person (self) who has desire (emotions) to put into motion (mind) your spiritual path through life (Universal).

Hahnemann used both words, dynamis as well as vital force in this aphorism. He didn't do it by accident. He wanted them in there to force those who were on a mystic path to reach deeper into their own understanding of mystic tradition to grasp, fully, the unique power and signature of homeopathy and how and WHY it really works. Let's look at this more simply defined:

When you are born into a VITAL (pro-life, wants to live and survive) unique, one-of-a-kind physical body (the self), you come with a UNIVERSAL spirit who has certain DYNAMIS or desires that it fulfill in a given life time (reincarnation and the laws of Karma/Dharma are in effect here). You are given the WILL to move through life.

Hahnemann himself reiterates: "In the state of health the "spirit-like vital force(dynamis )" This was a mystic's statement if there ever was one. By looking at the foundational words he chose, we now know he was one. Hahnemann was way, way, way ahead of his time. He knew exactly what he was doing and why. I believe he had many fine lines to tread and could not get too mystical or even he, would be thrown completely out by his students who had some clues, but not the whole picture. I'm sure that some of Hahnemann's closest friends were also mystics. Sometimes, one cannot say everything they know. Sometimes, especially regarding mystics, one must be judicious about what is shared and how much is, with the unenlightened, "asleep" masses, etc. It is within the mystic's purview to DISCRIMINATE and to know just how much to share and say to the masses; and when not to say or share any more than that because it will be beyond them and over their head. They will not grasp or understand. The mystic's "job" then, is to be a catalyst, bring as much information through as s/he can to the masses, create the "opening" energetically for that knowledge to come through to all of us. Hahnemann's Organon reflects this repeatedly throughout as he hammers home the vital force to all homeopaths.

SO, WHAT THE HECK IS A VITAL FORCE?

So many homeopaths have tried to define this. If we take a restricted look at it through the dictionary definitions of:

DYNAMISM:
n. Philos. "One of the various doctrines that endeavor to explain the phenomena of the universe, chiefly or wholly, in terms of force of energy."

We get some clues, don't we? We're dealing with the "big banana" here--not some mere, microscopic concept, are we? What we can say--that Hahnemann was saying: The vital force is about a universal energy that is everywhere around and in us. It is a force of energy.

The trick here is: how is the energy filtering through each of us? Let's stop here for a moment and consider this possibility. Here's an example: If you can imagine that each of us has a transparent crystal prism floating just above the top of our head and this universal force of energy which we'll conjecture is "white light" in a laser or flashlight form, shining down through that prism, this will do as an example. We're still talking energy here; only more specifically, the energy mechanics of how it affects our spirit/aura/fields that surround each of our physical bodies and eventually affects our solid, third-dimensional form, as well.

White light or sunlight, when it shines THROUGH that prism above the top of our head and moves down into our body, as well as into our auric fields (there's 9 of them), then they CHANGE COLOR. Sunlight through a prism will cast a beautiful rainbow of colors against a wall if you want to try it yourself. These colors are important. This white light is considered universal energy. The Hindu refer to it as "prana" or life. Call it what you want--Hahnemann knew it was out there and called it dynamis, not prana. Who cares? What is important is to grasp the theory of what underpins our life and our health or lack of it.

The colors move to each of the major endocrine glands in our body. With each gland, it's invisible (to most people except clairvoyants) counterpart is the etheric field which encases our body like a glove fitting a hand. Within the etheric field are major and minor chakras or "energy stations" which move in a circular motion, like rotors on a plane's engine and suck in and spew out this one, specific color. It is their job to move and draw in or remove energy throughout our fields and body. There's is a most important job--the connector between the seen (physical body) and the unseen (our auric fields). BOTH need to be fed this nutritious supplement from the universe or we will die. We will lose our health. We will not be whole nor will we have health.

As this universal dynamis of energy bathes us aurically as well as physically, LIFEis maintained. Life is vital and alive. The force of the universe and ourselves, are one. When this incredible marriage is working between the seen and unseen, one is healthy. Let's look at the colors and the endocrine glands they are associated with in passing (this could be a book in itself!):

Pituitary gland (crown chakra): white light

Pineal gland (brow chakra): violet color

Thyroid gland (throat chakra): cobalt blue

Thymus (heart chakra): apple green

Pancreas (solar plexus chakra): golden yellow

Spleen (naval chakra): dark orange

Ovaries/Testicles (root chakra): bright, vivid red

That, in a "nut shell" is the universal force/energy known as dynamis to homeopaths, and prana to Hindu religion--it is known by many labels; basically, it is the same thing with the same functions and outcome--health or lack of it.

And let's look at:

DYANMICAL (same as Dynamic):
"a. 1. Phys. Sci. Of or pertaining to forces not in equilibrium; pertaining to motion as the result of force: opposed to STATIC. 2. Pertaining to or characterized by mechanical force. 3. Producing or involving activity or action of any kind; motive; efficient; causal; applied sometimes to mental, moral and spiritual conditions."

Our Vital Force is then something that moves and is in a constant state of flux. It is NOT static! Not ever. Further, it is certainly involved in activity of the most universal dynamis kind as we've covered above--it is always working to draw in this white light energy, this prana, and then "digest" it both on the invisible realm as well as through physical endocrine glands which speed hormonal messengers throughout our body to keep us in harmony and balance. And our Vital Force is very efficient and it certainly applies to not only our mental, moral and spiritual condition, but in every way possible.

That is why Hahnemann absolutely insisted that homeopathy could touch every LEVEL of ourselves: from our spirit to our emotions, to our mental matrix/construct of how we thought, right down to the nuts and bolts of our physical "vehicle", our body.

OUR VITAL FORCE

We can say many things about our Vital Force AND our dynamis. You cannot separate the two of them because Hahnemann did not, either. Your vital force and dynamis are:

1. It is efficient which means that it will not harbor dis-ease in any form, on any level of ourselves. It is efficient from the standpoint that it will error on the side of health rather than sickness.

2. If a person becomes dis-eased, the VF will throw out symptoms like red flags, to alert us that it (our health) is going out of balance and out of harmony. Above all, our VF is aggressive and assertive about 'talking to us' in the language of symptoms we may get.

3. The VF is more than just the physical body; it is our morals, values, our integrity and our spirit. You cannot separate any of these from one another; they are a unit and must be seen and a homeopathic case taken as a UNIT.

4. The VF is: "Producing or involving activity or action of any kind; motive; efficient; causal" which means it is alive, there is movement (even if we don't see it with our two eyes, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist--just look at gravity! Can you see it? No, but you can see the outcome of it in our daily lives! The same applies to our VF). Because our VF is hooked up with our spirit, we have motive in our lives. What are those motives? Those are determined before birth, when you are deciding what you want to come into a physical body to learn in this lifetime--perhaps to pay back some karma owed to people or situations, to receive back dharma from people or situations owed to you. Our modus operandi is in full, forward motion then, when we are born.

The VF is "efficient" which means its not going to allow poor health, nutrition or traumas to idle way their time within it. Nope, it will become quite aggressive (consider this a knee-jerk reaction) in spewing it out and trying to get rid of it from the aura or chakra(s) involved because in its infinite intelligence (which is hooked up to the Universe) it knows that if it don't get rid of it, it will eventually kill you and your VF is the biggest Cosmic guard dog on the block--it will instantly give you "symptoms" to point at what is wrong or going out of balance/harmony within you.

The VF is "causal". I love this word. Causal as defined by my old 1923 dictionary refers back to "cause" which they say is: 1. "The power or efficient agent producing any thing or event. 2. Any occasion or condition upon the occurrence of which an event takes place. 3. Any rational ground for choice or action; reason."

Causal: "Pertaining to, constituting, involving or expressing a cause."

This means that you have set up many 'choices' before you were born, drawn people who are your teachers, into your life and set up any number of situations, so that you can continue to learn from a spirit/soul level. You might say that Earth is really a big school of learning and education from the spirit/soul point of view, and all we are, are students within this global institution.

Shakespeare had it correct: "All the world is a stage" and we are all actors and actresses playing out or individual VF dramas on a daily basis. The carrot in front of our noses, metaphysically speaking, is that we learn, grow, evolve and become more compassionate and loving and as a result of that, grow toward God/Goddess and become one in union with them eventually, over many thousands of lives (for most of us--some are on a fast track, others are slower--but the bottom line is that we're all heading back to that loving Source).

Your VF is going to work through the Source, into your soul which is the container for all your lives and the knowledge and learning you accrue, to your spirit, which is with you and quite individual for each lifetime you live. That is "causal" and your VF is engaged at every level of it.

5. Our VF is "Of or pertaining to forces not in equilibrium; pertaining to motion as the result of force: opposed to STATIC."

Comment:
One of the many things our VF does is keep us in harmony and balance--that is its job. When we make a poor decision that throws us out of equilibrium/harmony/balance, then the VF is going to be in your face, in the language of "symptoms" (mental, emotional, physical or spiritual) to remind you that what you chose wasn't good for your health on any level. The VF is never static; nor will it allow us to be in stasis, either. You might look at it as the old kick in the pants.

6. Our VF is also: "Producing or involving activity or action of any kind"

Comment:
Our VF is never quiet, still, sluggish, DOA (dead-on-arrival), static or unmoving. If you are a clairvoyant you can see the incredible, continual swirling of energy patterns and the kaleidoscope of colors that constantly are moving within our auric eggshell that surrounds all of us. Indeed, if you just look at the physical human body--everything is in motion all the time! There is nothing in stasis--ever.

7. Our VF is "a form of energy conjectured to give rise to and control the phenomena of organic life."

Comment:
Above all, the VF is going to fight to maintain health in us at every level. That gives us not only life, but a quality of life as well as longevity of that life.

8. Our VF is: "1. Any cause that produces, stops, changes or tends to produce, stop or change, the motion of a body. "

Comment:
Our VF is a consummate "machine" or mechanical energy in some respects. It is living and has an intelligence for it can produce, stop, change by creating symptoms in us to make us aware that all is not right in our world of health.

9. "Loosely, any operating energy"

Comment:
The VF is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nonstop.

10. " Power or energy, as lodged in an individual agent. "

Comment:
The VF imbues each of us with this power, with this energy. WHAT we do with it, how we integrate it within ourselves and make choices on how we express it. THAT is the crux of the matter, for if we don't "go with our own, internal Flow" (you can tell if you do or not because synchronistic events abound outside of you daily--and if they don't, you are "out of your personal Flow" of energy expression), then poor health will set in.

11. "To drive or impress forcibly upon some object or into some position; especially, to impose upon one without consent; as to force one's opinions on another. "

AND...

" Power or energy considered as exerting constraint or compulsion; coercion."

AND...

"To overcome or conquer forcibly; compel to yield by force; hence, to commit a rape upon. "

Comment:
Our VF knows what is best for us at all times; it is that little voice inside our head/heart/gut that gives us a "sense" or intuition about everything we draw/magnetize into our lives. The question is: Do we listen to it and act upon it or not? If we don't; poor health. If we do, we maintain harmony and balance; therefore, good health. When we start making wrong decisions for ourselves, either personally or try to impinge our control over others, this is when poor health sets in and this is when the VF engages at high speed to give us all kinds of warning signs: Known as "symptoms."

Another aspect of "force" is that if we continue to repeat the same mistake over and over again, this implies that we're not learning from it or we are just plain heading in the wrong direction (vs. the right direction for us, our learning/education, this lifetime from a spirit perspective).

12. "The capacity to convince or move; weight; import. 7. Binding effect; efficacy. "

Comment:
Our VF can move mountains, literally and figuratively speaking--IF it is allowed to. What stops it? Us. Us and our defective pattern tapes from childhood hammering at us. We draw the same people, the same situation into us, again and again, and we don't "get it". We're like dumb oxen; just doing repetitive things over and over again. That energy will bind us, trap us and keep us a virtual prisoner of our own mindset/emotions. The VF doesn't like this and will, consequently, send out red flag warnings in the guise of symptoms.

13. " To compel by mental or moral force as by strength of evidence. "

Comment:
The VF is very much a whipping post for our emotions and to our mindset. Our hopes, dreams, wishes are the light side of this. How we feel about ourselves, our shame, humiliation, second-citizen demeanor is the dark side of this. Desire is one of the greatest imprisoners of ourselves and that is the dark side of this. The light side is desire will set us free. It is in WHAT you desire; you magnetized the particles of the universe, the "prana", the "dynamis" and eventually, out of sheer desire, we manifest what we want. A desire to get healthy will work well with our VF. A desire to doggedly go after what you think you desire vs. what you really need, will set your VF off and the alarm will sound via symptoms.

13. "To stimulate artificially; as to force plants in a hothouse."

Comment:
The VF will tolerate being imprisoned for just so long before it will buck at the traces and harness we've chosen to put ourselves in. A perfect example of this is: A woman who marries a man with money--not because she loves him, but because she wants security over love. Love is worthless in her prioritizing of life--right or wrong. The VF does not tolerate us lying to ourselves, deceiving ourselves (consciously or unconsciously). It's whole reason for being is to ALWAYS stimulate us toward good health; for in good health we will find not only security (ourselves), but understand what love is and be able to integrate it fully into ourselves.

14. "An organized or aggregated body of individuals; a police force; especially, a military aggregate; an army; troop. "

Comment:
The VF is organized, it is ruthless in its objectives and aims for us to have good health and it is not going to strive for anything less. The more out of balance/harmony we become, the more insistent it "talks" to us--by an "army" of symptoms!

15. " Affecting life; fatal to life; as in vital error. "

Comment:
The VF will kill us in order to maintain harmony. For example, a man who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia takes a homeopathic remedy which sets into motion with the VF's support, will go from an unhealthy mental state and adopt a physical dis-ease instead, such as cancer. From the VF's perspective, this is fine and it will work toward clearing the cancer out of the man's body. However, no VF has unlimited power and energy; they only have so much. And while its true we all have a VF, some people have a weak one, others, a fairly strong one and others, a powerful one. Depending upon the strength of the VF, the man will either live or die because the VF will not allow cancer to inhabit his body, either. If the VF runs out of steam, the man dies of cancer.

From the VF's perspective here, the dying off of the vehicle or 'shell' (our body) that we live in, is perfectly acceptable because our spirit lives on; and it becomes an intrinsic part of our soul which is energy and can never be destroyed. This trade-off is the view of the VF.

16. " Necessary to existence or continuance; necessary; essential. "

Comment:
The VF in its innate intelligence, will do everything in its power to sustain life. It does not idly choose the physical death of our body as acceptable. It will fight until the bitter end to preserve life.

SUMMING IT UP

There is nothing simple about the Vital Force or our dynamis. What is important is that we all own these marvelous energies! We can never forget that we are like a cake recipe that consists of; spirit, mind, emotion and a physical vehicle in which we inhabit for a short period of time down here in a rough and tumble school called Earth. Our VF is an incredible warrior for and in our behalf. Let's listen to her/him. Let's listen to that small, gentle internal voice and does as it asks for only then, will we have health. Where there is health, there are no symptoms.

COMMENTS BY DEBRA:
Eileen, my comment is that I absolutely, empathically agree with everything that you have said. Some folks have always had a problem believing in stuff they can't 'see'. Hahnemann was a brilliant man, but, (to me) more importantly, he was extentional in his thinking. He saw things and knew things that got him into a lot of trouble and he was ostracized by the academics. However, did he care? No. He just spoke the truth...he set it free and let if take flight. For that, I applaud Sam, and you.

Some folks could (and do) see what he saw, and those are the metaphysical among us. Some folks see the science part of it only, and those are the purists. There's room for both of us. Some folks wouldn't want to have someone like me for a homeopath, and that's okay. They can find their comfort zone with a homeopath who is more mainstream, for lack of a better word.

A metaphor I like to use when trying to explain that things exist that we can't always see, is an airplane propeller. When it is stopped, or spinning at a slow speed, we can all see it. However, when it speeds up, we can't. That doesn't mean it's not there. If you get too close, it can still chop you in half.

It has always been a thought of mine that auras, spirit beings, souls, whatever   is unobservable to the masses is that way because it is vibrating at a faster speed than we can readily observe. For some reason (which I believe may be due to more alpha/delta/theta waves than 'normal') some of us can see these phenomenae (sp?). No one (I don't think) would argue that each of us has an intrinsic quality that makes us unique. Not everyone can see it, but we know it's there. We can feel it. We can either be attracted by it, or repelled by it, or perhaps even feel neutral. So, I'd be willing to bet that there is not one among us who, at the very least can't feel the etheric field of others, even if they can't see them.

I don't pretend to know exactly what this etheric field is. It's energy. It's colours, it's feelings, it's thoughts, it's the non physical, the invisible, but it's there. We are energy beings, with a physical component, not the other way around, as is commonly thought.

The Ancient Ones knew all of this to be true. Somehow, modern man has a problem coming to terms with it. It's time to get back to basics.

DIFFERENT TRANSLATIONS IN [ ] BY GABY:
"In the state of health the spirit-like vital force (dynamis) animating the material human organism reins in supreme sovereignty.

[In the state of health of man the spirit-like - as Dynamis animating the material body (organism) - vital force (Autocracy) rules unlimited. GR]

COMMENTS BY PAUL:
This is a wonderful aphorism that shows us a side of Hahnemann that reveals a deep understanding of Man, one which is sadly lacking in today's Orthodox approach, perhaps missing from the minds and hearts of quite a few Homoeopaths.

I think almost every word he uses is important and well chosen, as the total conveys an idea concerning Man that I find even holistic practioners might find differring to what they commonly have thought so far.

APHORISM 9
"In the state of health the spirit-like vital force (dynamis) animating the material human organism reins in supreme sovereignty.

COMMENT BY PAUL:
"In the state of health" - often I hear discussions about "the meaning of health" and the "meaning of freedom". I think this Aphorism shed's some light on these questions. Firstly, we are not just "Spirit" and "Matter".  There are different aspects to our non-material composition. I posted something a while back describing the different body members (physical, etheric, soul, and ego). These are 4 components of Man (and here I am obviously implying Homo sapiens, not male) which interact in our earthly existence and through which we can experience health or disease.

Very briefly, if we compare the 4 realms of nature then we see the following components.

Physical realm - consists of matter

Plant realm consists of matter, plus a life energy which keeps the matter in certain structure and order and allows growth - called the etheric level.

Animal realm consists of matter, etheric keeping the material body "alive" plus they have the capacity for sensation feeling and desires. So if an animal is too hot, it can move to the shade, if hungry it can hunt for food etc. Thus it has a soul component, also called an astral body.

Humans have physical, etheric and soul capabilities, but in addition have a 4th component which gives us our individuality. This is our ego, (not to be confused with being egotistical). this allows us to stand upright, to have the power of speech, but most importantly to find our individual space and to be able carry out our mission on Earth and have a personal relationship with God. Through our ego-consciousness we can interact with the earth and so accomplish (hopefully) our spiritual evolution.

So the non-physical part, which is often referred to erroneously as "spirit", is actually composed of differents aspects - etheric, soul (astral) and ego ("I"). In reality there are 3 higher spirit members as well which will pertain more to future incarnations at new evolutionary steps - but that would be a whole new topic and is not relevant to what Hahnemann is saying here, so I won't go into that here.

To back up what I am saying with Hahnemann's words, notice that he talks about "the spirit-like vital force (dynamis )". Firstly - spirit-like.  Secondly he says which "animates" the human body, so this is a life force, or life energy. In the next part he goes on to say:

" It maintains the sensations and activities of the all the parts of the living organism in a harmony that obliges wonderment. the reasoning spirit who inhabits the organism can thus freely use this healthy living instrument to reach the lofty goal of human existence."

So it is a maintaining energy and keeps the material (molecular) part of Man in equilibrium and harmoniously integrates the different functions so that "sensation" (feeling etc) and activity (action) can happen to our "wonderment", as is everything that is God inspired and created. This is the etheric level he is talking about. A healthy etheric level is one where the maintaining process can happen without opposition ("rules with supreme sovereignty").

And for what purpose? - So that the "reasoning spirit" (Ego consciousness) who inhabits (LOVELY) the organism (etherically maintained physical body) can thus freely use this healthy living instrument (thats what your body is) to reach the lofty goal (as are all things of higher spiritual nature) of human existence (our present evolutionary state).

WOW - powerful words from Hahnemann. So he is telling us that he understands that the real YOU is a reasoning spirit who is "inhabiting" a physical existence for a purpose ( a lofty goal). Now when one studies these matters further it is clear that when we incarnate into our next existence, we do so in a body which is chosen during our phase between incarnations. In this matter we are aided by the Lords of Karma and the body is prepared through generations of "Earthlings". We then "inhabit" the potential body through the act of conception and pregnancy, entering the body at the moment of birth when we take our first "breath". Note the same for Adam, when he received the breath (pneuma or spirit) of life and "became a living soul (nepesh)".

So the lofty goal of human existence is to work through our Karma, and in so doing we have the opportunity of spiritual development. For this purpose we have been given a specific body, in specific circumstances (race, family influence, social standing etc etc etc) in order to be able to accomplish our task. (So I didn't get my silver spoon !!).

This is why the situation of the individual becomes so important in choosing a remedy. A Staphysagria will be often an individual born into a family where the Uncle takes advantage, or the older brother molests her etc. An Aurum will be born into a situation where duty and responsibility become of paramount importance, where the father perhaps passes away and the son must continue the business, with the task of keeping the ship afloat.

Now what Hahnemann is saying is that we need a healthy state in order to achieve our lofty goal. He is not just saying a "healthy body". He says to "maintain sensations (soul level- feeling) and activities (results of conscious or unconcious decisions to do something)". Through the ability to have sensation and perform activity we can, through our ego-conciousness (reasoning spirit) interact with our enviroment. We can respond to the sensations and we can choose to perform certain activities.

As an example. I feel hungry. This is a sensation. It is a soul feeling.

"I" as an individual can now choose to

1. Stay hungry - for whatever purpose (I am on a protest hunger strike; or I am on a health fast)

2. Work hard so I have enough money for food

3. Go and rob a bank to get even more money for food

4. Eat a Mars bar.

Especially 2 and 3 will have an influence on the state of my Karma in the future incarnations, so I need to really think this one through.

2, 3 and 4 have all required an activity directly related to achieving what I chose to do. (In 1 I simply stayed in bed.)

Now if the harmony of sensations and activities was not there, this might influence my choice. For example, I might be so hungry (excessive sensation or desire) that I grab the nearest Mars bar. Because my etheric level has not adequately maintained the physical aspect of my pancreas, I suffer from hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) so I get these cravings (sensations) and then do (activity-a result of my will) what my sensations (soul level - animal level) wants, rather than what my Reasoning spirit would have wanted to do which is to eat something healthy so that my etheric is best capable of repairing the pancreas.

My desire (sensation) to be rich quickly will likewise result in actions of consequence, the value of which is determined by the degree to which my ego-conciousness is correctly engaged. Engaged to a lower nature and I rob the bank. Engaged to a higher nature, I work harder, never forgetting to do so selflessly (perhaps so that I can use the money for a good cause).

Sensations and activities are the means by which we interact with our environment, i.e. with our earthly surroundings. A healthy vital force implies a healthy inner state and allows maximum developement.

Boy do I need a 50M shot of whatever that implies.

COMMENTS BY ATHENIANS:
COMMENT BY DEBRA
There's no question that Sam was way ahead of his time. But he came into his incarnation with a mission and a message, and he was supremely successful in accomplishing that task. His legacy lives on.

So many times in our history, individuals have come and given us gifts of knowledge to further our evolution. Jesus was one, Buddha another. And then there's Sam. I know there are many more, but this is enough to make my point. I am not extensively knowledgeable about the life and message of the Buddha to comment on his legacy. But I sure do know a lot about Jesus, both from the standard position in which I was raised, as well as in the new information coming to light these many centuries later. I see a strong parallel between Jesus and Sam. Both had their message for mankind, and both were successful in getting that message out. But as so often happens, as the message was passed along, the ones carrying it would sometimes drop or ignore the parts they maybe didn't understand, or even (unfortunately) the parts they didn't want others to understand, for whatever reason. The original message became obscured, lost some of its meaning and clarity.

I see, with Homeopathy, that the mechanics were handed down just fine, and that was because they worked so spectacularly. But perhaps the students receiving the message couldn't grasp the concepts behind the mechanics, and so they pushed the concepts out of the way and focused on what worked for them. And slowly, the original message got watered down in the passing. I know for a fact, from personal experience, that homeopathy works, and that it will work whether you believe in it or not (it is not a "placebo" effect, as many scientists and doctors tried to claim, and some still do). But I never really was able to grasp the "why" of how it works as well as I am beginning to now. Other than Vitkoulas (sp), I never found anything written that even tried to explain it, it was just taken for granted that it did, and no real effort was made to examine the reasons why (at least from what material was available to me, as a layperson-which wasn't all that much).

Every once in awhile, someone will come along and pick up the dusty, tradition-encrusted gem of an old idea, and they will begin to dust it off, and to polish it, until its original brilliance can once again shine forth. I feel that this is what we are seeing with the discussion on these aphorisms. You have all been doing such a great job at describing these, that I feel like the lightbulbs are going off in my head, the "Aha!" is hitting me. It is all beginning to make much more sense to me now.

And slowly, ever so slowly (because I'm impatient to see it happen) the rest of the world is stirring, and beginning to wake up and recognize what Sam was saying about our wholeness, about WHO WE ARE, and what you have so marvelously described for us in your discussion of Aphorism 9.

In the words of Jesus (paraphrased), "may all who have ears, hear the message".

Thank you, Eileen, Debra, Gaby and Paul, for bringing that message to us.
Deb

Worse, and this falls onto the patient who is trusting that our knowledge is solid: very few homeopaths today (except for metaphysical ones or those who understand the energy system around and through us) can tell the difference between DELUSION and CLAIRVOYANCE.

I haven't spent enough time with a rep, but I learned (I guess from watching other cases explained) to search under "Mind, Delusion, is followed by ghosts." I'm wondering now is there a section like "Mind, Clairvoyance, sees ghosts/spirits?"

I guess I was under the impression that anytime the patient was exhibiting some "strange" behaviour on a mental level, that it usually fell under delusions. At this point I would be hard pressed to distinguish between "Mind, delusion, is under superhuman control" and "Mind, clairvoyance, is under superhuman control" since that would be way outside my personal ability to observe.

And Eileen while you say SH knew about the higher connection, how would those supervising the provings take this? I've never seen actual proving notes (where does one find those BTW?) but I would THINK that if there is such a big pooh-pooh of things like this, that information would be "edited" out of the reps.

EILEEN'S COMMENT
Hi Aaron
you asked:

I can't comment on the old reps, or old provings. I know that the mystics of "that day" were in the belief that the masses should not know certain things; that they were not ready for them, spiritually speaking--that what they knew was waaayyy ahead of most people's time, belief sytem, etc. With that in mind, yes, things could certainly have been edited out. Keep in mind that the witch burnings went on for 400 years and the mindset during Hahnemann's time was still to not speak of certain things--and for heaven sake, don't write 'em down where you could get burned at the stake in proof of what you said. It didn't take much to get someone in trouble in the Middle/Dark Ages--heresay was good enuf.

I can comment on my provings I do with flower and gem essences. My people are trained to see/know the difference between a delusion and a psychic occurrence. Certainly, even a psychic occurrence can be delusional. An acute psychotic break may be clairvoyant, but it's a bad trip, so to speak and the hallucinations one sees/hears, etc., are real and are genuine. A psychic/clairvoyant who has CONTROL over their faculties is the difference between that and one out of control--such as an acute psychosis/break. We question our provers at length when we see this. We also have questions set up and designed to allow them to speak of psychic/clairvoyant 'things' (symptoms). And then, we'll go back and get the details to make certain it is a genuine clairvoyant event and not delusional. Remember, too, that provers (at least mine) are screened. We have their past and present medical history. They aren't allowed to do recreational drugs during the proving (if they do 'em at all). If they are on medical drugs, that will and can skew the picture; so there's a lot of in depth detail work to refine the data we receive from them.

Hope this helps?
Warmly,
Eileen

COMMENT FROM EILEEN TO DEVI:
Hi Devi
you asked:

With all that was said, is the VF and dynamism the soul?? Or is the VF and dynamism integral "parts" of the soul? Many many thank yous for all the energy and efforts put forth to us Athenians for the understanding of these aphorisms.

My understanding of it (one person's opinion here....) is that the Vital Force is part of one's spirit. The spirit is a "piece" of our soul. The VF and spirit, after one dies, and after all the info/experiences are sent back to the soul which is the receptical for all things, are then burned off days, weeks or months after one dies, depending upon how quickly we want to rejoin our soul.

This is kinda deep stuff...but.....spirit is part of the personality of the person in this given lifetime. The VF is a part of the soul...although because it (the spirit) is connected (always) with the soul for that lifetime, the VF is a minor part of it, too. The big thing to remember here is that VF/spirit (the personality you have this lifetime) are evnetually dissolved and only the xperiences and learnings from this life are maintained by the soul (your soul).

Hope this helps--but under a Merc R, it will probably snowball :-)

Warmly,
Eileen

JOYCE LAIDLAW:
In this post, I'll add some of Andre Saine's comments around the vital force; and then pull out more descriptions of it from Hahnemann in the Introduction.
------------------------------
Andre Saine, in his philosophy course for the Canadian Academy of Homeopathy, gives a quote of Hahnemann's from 1843 defining the vital force. Unfortunately, the reference was cut off on the audio tape and I couldn't find it:

"that OBSCURE principle, whereby organized beings are peculiarly endowed with certain powers and functions not associated with inorganic matter".

Andre goes on to to describe that life is a process. Health and disease are part of the continuum of the life process. At the base of life seems to be a principle. If that principle is absent, there is no organization, no breath/respiration, no defence against/exchange with the environment; the organism is in a state of entropy. When the principle is present, the organism is preserved and can achieve a certain level of integrity. He emphasized that the existence of the life principle preceeds function.

He further adds that the homeopath can use the above to determine what is happening in the organism in sickness/during the healing process. Is the life principle able to organize it properly? Is there harmony between the sensations and activities of the organism......or is there disharmony? [put the question regarding clairvoyance vs delusion to the test].

In the propagation of life, "something" is transmitted that is not altered by time and age; and another part that is altered by time and age. An seed can become a plant; the meeting of sperm and ovum can create a human being; the vital force/spark is passed along. The plant can continue producing viable seeds right until the end of its life. He gave the example of Charlie Chaplin fathering children at 70 yrs of age -- despite coming near the end of his life; a baby with a strong vital force was born. If someone procreates when they are tired, exhausted and have a very low battery; will the offspring have low vitality?

He left his students with a few questions to reflect on as they practised in their laboratories over the years. They could be answered with observation, reflection, and with checking with others to see if their findings were reproducible (remember to not speculate/theorize but use the inductive method as discussed with aphorism 1). He felt that these are complicated questions; and are almost as obscure today as in Hahnemann's time:

- what is the relationship between the vital force and the spirt; the soul?

- " " vital force and the genes?

- is the quality of the vital force determined by the gene?

- is the quality of the gene determined by the vital force?

- can the vital force exist without genes?

- what happens when we exhale our last breath?

He finished the discussion by reminding his students that we only see manifestations of the vital force, and that we only see a glimpse of the universe. As human beings we have limited perception and observation, hence the need for humility (ie we can't see dark matter which comprises so much of the universe....)

--------------------------------------------

I went through the introduction (Boericke version) to pick out sentences where Hahnemann was describing the vital force (so we have some more adjectives) and man's spiritual nature as he went on berailing the allopaths of his time (caps are mine). He is making it very clear that the vital force's purpose is not to cure imbalance/disease; its purpose is to maintain the healthful and balanced state.

Para 20: "The champions of this clumsy doctrine of morbific matters ought to be ashamed that they have so inconsiderately overlooked and failed to appreciate the SPIRITUAL nature of life, and the spiritual dynamic power of the exciting causes of diseases...."

Para 32: "They merely followed the example of crude instinctive nature in her efforts, which are barely successful even in the slighter cases of acute disease; they merely imitated the UNREASONING life-preserving power when left to itself in disease, which entirely DEPENDENT as it is upon the ORGANIC LAWS of the body, is only capable of ACTing in CONFORMITY with these laws and is not guided by reason and reflection.......snip....this IRRATIONAL vital force receives into out body, witout hesitation, the greatest plagues of our terrestrial existence....."

Para 33: ".....the UNINTELLIGENT vital force......"

Para 34: ".....the CRUDE, SENSELESS, AUTOMATIC vital energy...."

Para 50: "But the vital force, which of itself can only act according to the physical constitution of our organism, and is not guided by reason, knowledge and reflection, was NOT given to man to be regarded as he best possible curative agent to restore those lamentable deviations from health to the normal condition"

Para 52: ".... that exquisite power innate in the human being, designed to direct in the most perfect manner the operations of life while it is in health, equally present IN ALL PARTS OF THE ORGANISM, in the fibres of sensibility as well as those of irritability, the unwearying spring of all the NORMAL functions of the body, was not created for the purpose of affording itself aid in diseases, not for the purpose of exercising a healing art worthy of imitation."

Joyce

AND MORE FROM JOYCE:
Hi Eileen and fellow homeopathic enthusiasts:
Like Lorie, I'm finding it takes awhile to be able to read, digest, ponder and find the time to reply in a constructive way to so much coming across our table. I'm going to start a response today; but may have to finish in the next cycle on other ideas raised in your long and thought provoking post.

Eileen writes:
Worse, and this falls onto the patient who is trusting that our knowledge is solid: very few homeopaths today (except for metaphysical ones or those who understand the energy system around and through us) can tell the difference between DELUSION and CLAIRVOYANCE. Unfortunately, thisis the sticking point that shows homeopathy's weakness in the 20th and 21st century--because they confuse delusion and clairvoyance, and do not know the difference or how to tell the difference--they automatically, in most cases, put the patient under "delusional"--and the WRONG remedy is chosen for them because of the homeopath's closed-mindedness toward metaphysics or their ignorance.

I think, Eileen, that this discussion really belongs to the first part of Aphorism 3:

"If the physician clearly perceives what has to be cured in disease, i.e., in each individual case of disease (knowledge of the disease),"

Andre Saine talks about some of the education, knowlege (exterior and interior), disposition and qualities needed to before one can really understand and practise homeopathy effectively. Holes in one's knowledge or manner will create scenarios as Eileen describes above. It truly asks alot of a practioner, but that is what makes it such a wonderful art and science and medium for personal growth.

Andre mentions that an aspiring homeopath will need to know alot about human nature. What is human nature? Some of its parts include a physical body, feelings, a personality, a mind, an ego, a soul, a Spirit (although some do not recognize things like a soul or Self ie the Buddhists). And the divisions between all of these parts isn't all that clear. Even modern research today in the field of psychoneuroimmunolgy is realizing it is hard to demark how the brain and the body are separate. And there are numerous concepts trying to explain the experience of soul vs Spirit. Just remember that concepts are only a map; they are not the terrain.

A way to understand the whole is to get as firm a grasp as possible on the parts. He suggests this means studying the gene to psyche and beyond; and from the beyond to the psyche to the gene. Study cell biology, microbiology (we apparently carry 10x more microbes than cells.....), genetics, psychological development, the stages in the development of consciousness, and the impact of one "part" on another. Include studies in anthropology and sociology. History: will give us a sense over time as to how we function. Etiology is the study of behaviour to get a sense of what is common vs. peculiar. Pathology and physiology in order to be able to recognize the phenomenon of disease from beginning to end. And hygiene (a biggie of Hahnemann) for all levels of our being; so the physician knows the basic "food" requirements for all the parts to keep it functioning in a healthy state.

He mentions a homeopath needs to be able to live, as Alan Watts puts it, in the "wisdom of insecurity"; to be able to let go of belief systems held to defend one's model of reality. Some qualities he mentions are:

1) to be able to balance logic with intuition (and this balance will come with evergrowing discernment and wisdom)

2) to be both open and critical at the same time; doubt what you observe.

3) a knowledge of the Self; especially to be honest about when you simply don't know, without the need to fill this void with speculation and theory. Only a very small percentage of theories arrived at through the deductive (and most usual approach) hold water over time. You can waste alot of time this way. Learn the inductive method introduced by Socrates and by Hahnemann into the field of medicine.

4) have a good foundation in the liberal arts and science; especially in philosophy. The liberal arts will expand one's knowledge of human nature. Philosopy will help develop skills in reasoning and discernment, and give some of the background in metaphysics Eileen mentions. [JL: Eastern philosopy will fill out the energy side a little more}. The arts will put one in touch with one's own feelings and experiences. [JL: a spiritual practice will also help!]

And his recommendation in all these studies is to constantly sift the part that is observable (even if its manifestations of the unobservable...) and repeatable; from the speculation around the observations and reflections.

A tall order.

There are slowly inroads being made in the allopathic profession to help with Eileen's specific concern. The DSM-IV now contains a distinction for spiritual problems; although the diagnostic criteria are still in the works by a working committe within the Kundalini Research Network. There is now a "Textbook of Transpersonal Psychiatry and Psychology", ISBN: 0-465-09530-5 being introduced at medical schools.

I agree with Ken Wilber (his writings have helped me profoundly to integrate multitudes of conceptual maps), there is an evolution of consciousness going on, and health practitioners of all persuasions will need to keep up with humanity as it evolves and grows. Its through our mistakes (ie calling someone delusional when they aren't); that hopefully we can be open enough to ask, hmmmmm, maybe I'm not seeing this right, and one more homeopath goes deeper.

Time for dinner. More in a couple of weeks as this is loaded........
Warm regards to all,
Joyce
