Aphorism 11
When a person falls ill, it is only this spiritual, self-acting (automatic) vital force, everywhere present in his organism, that is primarily deranged by the dynamic influence upon it of a morbific agent inimical to life; it is only the vital principle, deranged to such an abnormal state, that can furnish the organism with its disagreeable sensations, and incline it to irregular processes which we call disease; for, as a power invisible in itself, and only cognixable by its effects on the organism, its morbid derangement only makes itself known by the manifestations of disease in the sensations and functions of those parts of the organism exposed to the senses of the observer and physician, that is, morbid symptoms, and in no other way can it make itself known.

COMMENTS BY DEBRA
Basically, what Hahnemann is saying (with much passion) is that the symptoms that an individual experiences in a deranged state of health are merely a physical manifestation of what is really going on. Physical symptoms are the only way that the vital force has of letting us know that something is wrong, and that it is under attack by some unseen (invisible/dynamic) force. Since many of us can not see the vital force, and we can not see microbes floating through the air, attacking us, the vital force produces physical symptoms, which we can see, and feel, to let us know that it is not happy.

It is primarily the vital force that suffers...disease begins and ends there. The symptoms, on the other hand, are physical, and, while distressful, are merely secondary. If we did not get these physical symptoms, the vital force would have no other way to communicate to us that it is under stress, and not functioning in a healthy manner.

So, disease is a presentation of symptoms, to us, from the vital force, which produces irregularites in in the way we function.

These physical symptoms, or irregularities, are the vehicle that we use to determine, via the simillimum, what remedy the vital force is asking us for.

Footnote for Aphorism 11
What is dynamic influence,--dynamic power? Our earth, by virtue of hidden invisible energy, carries the moon around her in twenty eight days and several hours, and the moon alternately, in definite fixed hours (deducting certain differences which occur with the full and new moon) raises our northern seas to flood tide and again correspondingly lowers them to ebb. Apparently this takes place not through material agencies, not through mechanical mechanical contrivances, as are used for products of human labor; and so we see numerous other events about us as results of the action of one substance on another substance without being able to realise a sensible connection between cause and effect. Only the cultured, practised in camparison and deducation, can form for himself a kind of supra-sensual idea sufficient to keep all that is mataerial or mechanical in his thoughts from such concepts. He calls such effects dynamic, virtual, that is, such as result from absolute, specific, pure energy and action of the one substance upon the other substance.

For instance, the dynamic effect of the the sick-making force influences upon healthy man, as well as the dynamic energy of the medicines upon the principle of life in restoration of health is nothing else than infection and so not in any way material, not in any way mechanical. Just as the energy of a magnet attracting a piece of iron or steel is not material, not mechanical. One sees that the piece of iron is attracted by one pole of the magnet, nut how it is done is not seen. This invisible energy of the magnet does not require mechanical (material) auxiliary means, hook, or lever, to attract the iron. The magnet draws to itself and this acts upon the piece of iron or upon the steel needle by means of a purely immaterial, invisible, conceptual, inherent energy, that is, dynamically, and communicates to the steel needle the magnetic energy equally invisiblly (dynamically) The steel needle itself becomes magnetic, even at a distance when the magnet does not touch it, and magnetises other steel needles with the same magnetic property (dynamically) with which it had been endowed previously by the magnetic rod, just as a child with small pox or measles communicates to a near, untouched healthy child in an invisible manner (dynamically) the small pox or measles, that is, infects at a distance without anything material from the infective child going or capable of going to the one to be infected. A purely specific, conceptual influence communicated to the near child small pox or measles in the same way the magnet communicated to the near needle the magnetic property.

In a similar way, the effect of medicines upon living man is to be judged. Substances, which are used as medicines, are medicines only in so far as they possess each its own specific energy to alter the well-being of man through dynamic, conceptual influence, by means of of the living sensory fubrem upon the conseptual, controlling principle of life. The medicinal property of those material substances which we call medicines proper, relates only to their energy to call out alterations in the well-being of animal life. Only upon this conceptual principle of lefe, depends their medicinal health-altering, conceptual (dynamic) influence. Just as the nearness of a magnetic pole can communicate only magnetic energy to steel (namely by a kind of infection) but cannot communicate other properties (for instance, more hardenss or ductility, etc.). And thus every special medicianl substance alters through a kind of infection, that well-being of man in a peculiar manner exclusively its own and not in a manner peculiar to another medicine, as certainly as the nearness of the child ill with small pox will communicate to a healthy child only small pox but not measles. These medicines act upon the well-being wholly without communication of material parts of the medicinal substances, thus dynamically, as if through infection. Far more healing energy is expressed in a case in point by the smallest dose of the best dynamized medicine, in which there can be, according to calculation, only so little of material substance that its minuteness can not be thought abd conceived by the best arithmetical mind, than by large doses of the same medicine in substance. The smallest dose can therefore contain almost entirely only the pure, freely-developed conceptual medicinal energy, and bring about only dynamically such great effects as can never be reached by the crude medicinal substance itself taken in larger doses.

It is not in the corpreal atoms of these highly dynamized medicines, nor their physical or mathmatical surfaces (with which the higher enegergies of the dynamized medicines are being interpreted but vainly as still sufficiently material) that the medicianl energy is found. More likely, there lies invisible in the moistened globule ir in its solution, an unveiled, liberated, specific, medicinal force contained in the medicinal substance which acts dynamically by contact witht the living animal fibre upon the whole organism (without communicating to it anything material however highly attenuated) and acts more stronly the more free and more immaterial the energy has become through the dynamization.

It is so utterly impossible for our age celebrated for its wealth in clear thinkers to think of dynamic energy as something non-corpreal, since we see daily phenomena which cannot be explained in any other manner? If one looks upon something nauseous and becomes inclined to vomit, did a material emetic come into his stomach which compels him to this anti-peristalic movement? Was it not solelt the dynamic effect of the nauseating aspect upon his imagination? And if one rises his arm, does it occur through a material visible instrument? a lever? Is it not solely the conceptual dynamic energy if his will which raises it?

COMMENTS BY DEBRA
Okay, well, Hahnemann is surely shining in all his right-brained glory when we peruse this footnote :-)

I agree with what he is saying. Explaining it, however, may be another matter. :-)

Basically, he is attempting to explain the mechanics of energy...

Energy is everywhere, it is invisible. It is not material (physical), it is not mechanical, it just IS.

Since disease is energy, remedies must also be energy, to restore the vital force to balance.

Each universal entity has, as its own, a unique energy pattern, whether we are talking dis-ease or remedy, or any other form. Hahnemann explains this by using the example that a child infected with small pox will infect another healthy child with only small pox, rather than measles, or something else.

You will notice that Hahnemann referred to remedies as 'highly dynamized'. He knew, without the benefit of Avagadro's Hypothesis, that there was little or no physical substance in his remedies.

Hahnamann believed that the less material value a remedy had, the more energy it could express, almost as if by shedding its physical properties it evolved into a different energy form that could move and work in ways that we do not and can not understand. However, the vital force could communicate with it, and in uniting together, the correct remedy and the vital force would affect a cure.

That's all fine and dandy, but wait a minute...don't we know that many diseases are caused by viruses and bacteria...that they have a physical form. Yes, we do. Didn't we vaccinate the masses, and try to obliterate many of these diseases? Yes, we did. BUT, what did the diseases do, in retaliation? They mutated. Now, they are nastier than ever.

By using vaccinations, and anitobiotics, etc. in this way (and if we think about it, allopathic medicine really works in reverse of homeopathy...you use a anti- infammatory to reduce swelling, whereas in homeopathy you would use a substance that would normally induce swelling) we have modified the universal energy flow/balance, call it whatever you will. The mutated diseases are expressing their energy in a different way, and now and the medical establishment is having a helluva time trying to keep them under control.

So, I believe that Hahnamnn hit the nail on the head with his interpretation of energy mechanics, and his explanation that no, we don't understand exactly how it works, but the 'proof is in the pudding'. The remedy and the vital force carry on a private conversation which we are not privy to.The vital force and the remedy then proceed to negotiate and carry out a truce. The disease goes away, somewhere, but we don't really know where it goes. The vital force re-establsihes its equalibrium, and the organism is restored to health.

(*) Was ist dynamischer Einfluss, dynamische Kraft?

COMMENT BY EILEEN
Our Vital Force is our "red flag" warning us that we are out of balance or no longer in harmony with ourselves. Where? The symptoms will show up in that area. It can be on the spiritual level (such as an acute psychotic episode possibly that is really a Kundalini experience, as an example). It can be on the mental level where we box ourselves into life by our traumas; so we make up a mental construct to protect ourselves but in so-called, protecting ourselves, we also create opinions or things we live by which can, in the long run, become our prison as well. And the Vital Force not only likes to live, but flourish and grow--with keyword on growth. We can have emotional symptoms; and a good example of this is codependent behavior or victim behavior. We get entwined into these conditional patterns as innocent children (it was not our fault) but somehow, we had to survive the toxic family "dance". As a result, we got an emotional ingrained pattern set up in ourselves. The Vital Force won't put up with this either, for very long. We can have physical symptoms, such as headaches, skin ailments, etc., etc., the list is endless.

Any and all of these is our Vital Force trying to talk to us, trying to tell us something is wrong and needs to be put "right" or back into harmony. The Vital Force has an intelligence. If we honor it and our body and our intuitive knowing about ourselves, our way back to health is going to be much easier and quicker. Good health usually does not come easily--there is always growth and transformation, the break of old childhood conditional tapes that have to take place, as well.

COMMENT BY PAUL:
One thing that impresses me about this Aphorism, is the footnote. In a nutshell, what Hahnemann is saying has more relevance from our standpoint in the near millenium era.

He draws analagies between the vital force disordered by the morbific disease state and ideas such as magnetism. Once again we must remember that in 1800's when Hahnemann was writing this, the knowledge that Science had uncovered about the atom and even magnetism was in its infancy. Faraday started work on elctromagnetism in 1821. Dalton postulated his theory of atomic structure some time later. These are topics which are taught at high schools nowadays. I find this applies very much to our present dilemna with questions such as "how does homoeopathy work?" "what is the vital force?" "How do we measure it?" etc.

At some time in the future these questions will be solved and the knowledge will seem commonplace. Of course magnetism and atoms were around long before thories explaining them. The same with the vital force. Science cannot fully explain it, but this does not mean it doesn't exist. Likewise the internal disorder is not quantifiable yet. Therefore Hahnemann really felt it would be forever hidden FROM THE SENSES. Through the development of scientific apparatus, however we often manage to translate information into a form which we can observe by our senses. As an example, we cannot directly observe events billions of kilometers away, yet by taking a photograph of the X-ray or radiowave emission phenomena we can observe distant stars in their evolution. We convert the information to something our senses can receive. The same goes for a mmother who places a temperature strip on her child's forehead. The colour change allows us to "see" the degeee of fever. Sophisticated infra red scanning can allow us to "see" the state of tissues in the body.

In Hahnemann's time, this would have been "magic". One day the "magic" or "fantasy" aspect of the notion of vital force, will be commonly understood by the average high school scholar !!

Paul
